Wild and Wacky Off Roading

Today Jane takes us a little off the beaten track of Interstate 95 because you never know what you might find!

Travelling off of I 95

·         Cypress Creek  Hunting Lodge (2.5 hrs to Cyprus Creek / 8 hrs to Orlando)

Do you hunt?  Does your significant other hunt?  You could travel together and you could continue on to Orlando alone…If you take Exit 97 off of I 95 in Santee and travel for 2.5 hours, you will arrive near the Savannah River in the low country of South Carolina. A premier hunting lodge, Cyprus Creek Hunting Lodge has Hog Hunting from 4/1-9/31 and Alligator Hunting from 9/1-10/15.  This costs way more than Sewcation… so maybe you can finagle a retreat or two next year!  My question?  Do they do something with the meat?  Wondering! A harvested gator of 11’ + costs $3,500! Get some Market money before youLargest crab, split up!   ( http://www.cypresscreekhunting.com)

·         Myrtle Beach, SC(9.75 hrs to Orlando)

·        It has 60 miles of beaches and lots of places to play golf

·         “Tommy”, The World’s Largest Crab

Tommy is a 25”tall, 35’wide, 4.5 ton super sized orange crab that hangs over the entrance of Tommy’s Crab restaurant – a seafood buffet restaurant boasting 170 items on the buffet. (9597 N. Kings Hwy)

·        Fisherman and Shark Photo-Op
To the left of the giant crab is a statue of a grinning fisherman in a yellow rain slicker holding a fish.  The “gag” is for you to stand behind him and next to your catch -- a huge shark, dead, with toothy mouth agape, dangling from a scaffold. (9593 N Kings Hwy)

·        WonderWorks

WonderWorks Is one of Myrtle Beach’s top attractions.
The upside-down building is hard to miss.
When you enter the building, everything will be upside-down.  To participate in the fun, you must be inverted by stepping inside the inversion tunnel and,

be turned right side up to begin your journey. Once you are properly aligned there are more than 100 hands on exhibits on 4 floors. (on the boardwalk-wonderworksonline.com)

Georgia
Interstate 95 is 112 miles long in Georgia.
Travelling off of I 95

·         Savannah is 10 miles from I 95 (4.5 hrs to Orlando)
o    Are you looking for more “BIG” statues?  There is a Big Great Dane Statue Dog in front of  Great Dane Trailers This is just a few minutes from the interstate (E Lathrop Ave)

o   Is it time for lunch?  Also found in Savannah in the city market is Paula Dean’s restaurant, The Lady and Sons Restaurant.  You still have time to have some Southern food and make Kenneth’s presentation!

Brunswick, GA (3.5 hrs. to Orlando)
How about visiting a doll museum that is close to an exit? Try Exit 36… The Mary Miller Doll Museum has a great collection of toys ranging from 1850 to the present day. There are over 3,000 dolls on display.  There is also a large collection of doll houses, miniatures and accessories representing over 90 countries and over 150 years of history.  You will be able to see pre-Civil War china heads, bisques, early vinyls, and carved wooden pieces.  ( 209-211 Gloucester Street, Brunswick, GA)

                                                            Florida
Jacksonville (2.25 hrs to Orlando)
Are you making good time?  How about a picnic lunch along the St. John’s River?  There is a river walk along the Southbank that will give you some fresh air and views of the city. It has 1.2 miles of restaurants, bars, shops, museums, and a marina.  The Friendship fountain is one of largest self contained fountains in the world.               (Park by the Wyndham Hotel)

Daytona Beach (1 hr. to Orlando)
Daytona Beach has some wonderful things to see and do
·         Experience a panoramic view of the intercoastal waterway from the tallest lighthouse in Florida, Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse.

·         Drive on the famous beach ($5.oo for a day pass)

·         Visit the Daytona Speedway or the Kennedy Space Center
·         Go on a 20 minute free chocolate tour at Angell and Phelps Chocolate Factory. You can see the cooking process to the packaging which is all done by hand. Samples can be selected from chocolates made during the tour. (154 S. Beach Street)

Such a big decision!  You are almost to Orlando….but the beach…the candy…the Space Center….all so tempting!  Let me know what you choose!
