Woodlawn 54th Annual Needlework Show

The 54th Annual Needlework Show will open at Woodlawn, Alexandria, Virginia on March 1.

The show runs from March 1-March 31, 2017 and is open from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm every day except Tuesdays.

The show is supported each year by the Nelly's Needlers, an all-volunteer group of needleworkers.

You can submit your needlework pieces even if you do not live locally.Your piece must be mailed in between January 11 and February 1. For a piece to be eligible, it has to have been made by a living person, stitched with hand-held, threaded needle and finished appropriately.

I know from visiting the show a few times that smocking and heirloom sewing and embroidery is well represented, but more pieces would always be great publicity for our wonderful needlearts!

An Update

For those of you who saw me in Las Vegas and at Woodlawn (see photo in previous post), I have an update-the red cast on my right wrist came off today! I now have to do some exercises to get it to work properly-the painful part of the recovery!

Sewing will be my gentle therapy. I will keep you posted on my progress.

SAGA Meet Up at Woodlawn

So who knew that snow would be in the forecast for Alexandria, Virginia in late March? It was a close call that the planned SAGA Meet Up at the Woodlawn Needlework exhibit on Friday would actually be canceled due to bad weather, but luckily the local schools remained open and so did Woodlawn.

A good thing as SAGA President Lisa Hawkes and I (with Wes the bear) had driven down from Connecticut the day before in bright sunshine to meet up with Region II Representative Lindsay Carroll and other SAGA members at Woodlawn on Friday for lunch.

It was lovely to meet up with everyone over the luncheon and to chat with them as we walked around the displays of the entries. Even more fun to see ribbons awarded to SAGA members for their entries. Well done to those ladies and to all SAGA members who entered pieces!

Travelling Wes

Wes had a great time at the end of February in Las Vegas at the first Smock Across America retreat and was happy he made lots of new friends. He also got to see a few of the sights around Vegas, but no gambling for him!

Today Wes has his overnight bag packed as he is leaving for Alexandria, Virginia and a visit to the Woodlawn Needlework Exhibition for the SAGA Meet Up tomorrow!

SAGA Meet Up at 52nd Needlework Exhibition, Woodlawn

We invite you all to join us for a fun day out in Alexandria, Virginia at the Woodlawn Historic Plantation (www.woodlawnPopeleighey.org/events ) to tour the 52nd  Needlework Exhibition sponsored by Nelly's Needlers, a volunteer auxiliary.

 

Exhibition tickets may be purchased onsite the day of the event.  Exhibit admission cost is $12. We will meet at 1 pm in the gift shop and proceed to the self guided exhibit from there.

 

But why not plan on joining us for lunch before the tour? We have reserved 36 places for lunch at the Underwood Room for SAGA members and their guests at the 11 am lunch seating. Lunch reservations are only available by advanced reservation. The lunch cost is $21 and  includes entree, beverage, dessert and gratuity. Visit

52nd Annual Needlework Exhibition at Woodlawn

The 52^nd Annual Needlework Exhibition at Woodlawn, Alexandria, Virginia will take place in March 2015.

 

Woodlawn was the home of Eleanor Custis Lewis, a great needleworker and the exhibition honours her legacy. Funds raised are used to preserve the estate, which is a completely self-supporting non-profit historic site.

The needlework exhibition accepts entries in a number of categories including Fine Hand Sewing and Smocking- why not consider entering? Entries can be mailed to arrive no earlier than January 16, 2015 and no later than February 6, 2015. You can also drop off your entry in person between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm on February 6 and & 2015.

You could also visit the exhibition which begins March 1 and ends March 31, 2015 (closed Tuesdays). Opening times are 10:00am to 4:00 pm. Admission fee is $12 (free to exhibitors).

A light lunch is served daily from 11:30 am -2:00 pm and reservations are recommended for large groups. Lunch is created and served by members of Nelly’s Needlers. Proceeds (including tips) from the luncheons go to support Woodlawn.

It is daffodil time during the exhibit!

You can also visit the Museum Shop and might find some handmade needlework accessories amongst other items to take home!
